Are you getting into the holiday spirit at your place? My (LED!) lights have just been put up everywhere and will stay on all through the New Year.
During this increasingly dark time, I find tremendous joy
in working with bright colors, much like putting lights in my knitting!

Like these mittens?

This week will see our biannual YARN CRAWL, where 11 shops and farms put out the welcome mat for yarn crawlers. Fill a car with your fiber buddies and spend the day visiting them all. Each shop/farm will have a gift for you!

And the following week, come to the STUFFED MITTEN MARATHON
on Sunday, November 27, from 10-4 and bring a dish/dessert to share
for our pot luck lunch (I'll supply the drinks).

Early in December we are having an ARAN KNITTING WEEKEND WORKSHOP. Come to make a cabled hat!! Irish knit sweaters for babies and adults!
A truly warm pullover vest with flattering side slits!
Enjoy Jim's homemade soup for lunch!
Two chairs are left, so hurry and sign up if you are interested.

A class in the planning stage:
...a year long workshop for SPINNERS, exploring the process of spinning from a fleece, making enough yarn for a sweater, and then knitting the sweater. If you have been telling yourself you wanted to learn to spin and make a sweater the time honored way, 2012 could be your year of opportunity at Countrywool. Sign up with a friend and each of you will receive a FREE GIFT for your spinning wheel.
Watch this space in December for details!

OPEN ON SUNDAYS this month and next.
Countrywool is open 6 days a week and if you make an appointment, on the 7th as well.

SALE!  PEACE FLEECE!
And we have gotten in 3 new shipments in the last two weeks.
Come and check out what's here.

Halloween is upon us and the early evenings find me knitting by the fire at 6 pm.
We just had our 2nd snowfall of the year and did the cold descend quickly!
It always surprises me how quickly I forget
how much I enjoy the comfort of being warm in hand knits.
This has to be my FAVORITE time of year! The projects we all toyed with take a serious step as the cold weather firmly settles into everyone's neighborhood,
and we get motivated to make things for holiday giving.

NEW HOURS are in effect for this month and next.
Countrywool is open 6 days a week and if you make an appointment, on the 7th as well.

The shop is chock full of finished hand knits for you to check out, all with accompanying patterns. AND, our COUNTRYWOOLERS  Ravelry group constantly points folks to patterns available free on-line.  To help out with your fall project needs, Countrywool is discounting all the remaining LANALOFT WORSTED MONOCHROMATIC yarns to
4 skeins for $20 a 40% discount! (must buy 4)
and all the remaining
BERROCO SOX skeins to
3 skeins for $30 a 30% discount (must buy 3)

We have a new credit card system in place and during the month of November,
if you make a $50 purchase and use your credit card to pay for it,
you'll get a free KNITTER'S TOOLBOX (one per customer).

Used JOY Spinning Wheel FOR SALE
new: $725
$425 (folds flat & comes with green carrying bag)

I am in the process of organizing a SHEEP-TO-SWEATER class for spinners next year...check out our RAVELRY group to get in on the planning.

Are your needles clicking while you are reading this note? I am hurrying to complete the NORTHCOTT CARDIGAN SWEATER so I can wear it while the weather cools. That sweater and the ROLL NECK PULLOVER SWEATER will both be featured at our fall SWEATER WORSHOP. This class runs for 4 Saturday morning sessions and can get you a sweater that FITS by seriously cold weather.
Both patterns use bulky soft yarns, so the knitting moves right along.
Our first class meets Saturday, October 22, at 10 am.  Sign up now!

And for all you spinners...how about working with a few local fibers? We have some FIBER CLASSES scheduled where you'll receive the washed fleece from local farms, instruction on what to do with it, and some yarn samples to aim for.
Learn about flick and hand carding; curly spinning, and breed characteristics.
The first class is Saturday, October 22 at 3:30. Sign up now!

Are you feeling a little lost lately? Mid summer tends to drain energy from even the most creative of us here in the northern US. This is actually the calm before the storm of inspiration that will arrive next month, and I use it to rest and reorganize. This is a GREAT opportunity to look over and wash your woolen items in anticipation of cool weather in October.
see instructions here)

And speaking of October, before you know it, you'll have cold feet.
Hard to think about this in the blast furnace of heat we are experiencing
in the Hudson Valley of NY, but it is a fact.
To this end, Countrywool will hold a
FREE SOCK KNITTING CLASS in 3 weeks at...

  Countrywool's
FULL MOON UFO AND SOCK KNITTING SATURDAY
on AUGUST 20 from noon -3 pm
finish up a knitting project that WILL NOT GET DONE on its own,
  OR
learn to knit socks* with Countrywool's unique generic pattern
LOGICAL SOCKS, featuring the SHORT ROW HEEL.

And, coming in September; the knitting & spinning pace quickens with
  •  SHOP HOURS 5 DAYS A WEEK
  • LACE WEEKEND WORKSHOP
  • LEARN TO SPIN
  • ADIRONDACK FIBER FESTIVAL
Happy summer to all!
Claudia

*For sock knitting, bring, (or purchase while there)
double pointed needles US # 1.5 or 2
2 skeins Mini Mochi (pictured) OR 1 skein Berroco Sox OR Bearfoot yarn
tape measure
3 clipping stitch markers

The heat of the summer is bringing long, lazy evenings to us all.
I am finding knitting and spinning on my deck with the dogs at my feet to be a
most WONDERFUL way to spend twilight hours.
I've been toddling along with a few projects,
getting them to the point of finishing,
and then putting them by.
But now, a PERFECT opportunity has arrived to get those last details done...

Come to Countrywool's
FULL MOON UFO SATURDAY
on July 16 from noon -3 pm
to finish up a knitting project that WILL NOT GET DONE on its own.

And this month, with its heat and sun, is the perfect time
to dye fiber, roving, fleece and yarn.
Making one's own yarn from raw fleece has to be
THE most satisfying craft I have ever pursued.
All of that will be taking place at Countrywool,
along with a full weekend spinning retreat here at the shop.
Folks new to spinning will enjoy this 2 day class,
and those of you comfortable with your wheels
will learn all about spinning angora based yarns.
Be sure to sign up before JULY 15 so I can keep it in the lineup!

Happy summer to all!
Claudia
