Claudia's Fall Checklist

With lighted pumpkins and wind whirled falling leaves, comes Countrywool's Solar Friendly shop hours. Since relying on solar energy for the heat in the shop, we have found it prudent to limit the shop hours in the chilly seasons to when the sun could be shining. We close those days at 4 pm, when the sun makes its nightly downturn, until late March. Rest assured, we are open BOTH days each weekend so everyone can get here.

November 5 we gather in the lovely Catskill Mountains at the quaint Winter Clove Inn to work on Gloves, Mitts & Mittens. The drive there just after Halloween is spectacular, and the hot mulled cider you'll find in the retreat hall hits the spot. We welcome beginners and pros alike, and everyone in between. The projects offered are many, but you can work on just one, or all of them. There are still a few spots open!

I have just finished editing a new pattern for the retreat...Mohair Pointless Mitts.
They are made using Kid Seta (kid mohair/silk) knit along
with Lanaloft hand painted Sport.

November is a great time to learn something new. The Learn To Spin classes, both at the shop and at the Adirondack Folk School, can get you started on that yearned for hobby: spinning. Making your own yarn is incredibly creative. Imagine one of these beauties in your living room!

Claudia's Fall Checklist

Leaves are falling and Rhinebeck Sheep and Wool Festival is upon us this weekend!
This is SUCH an exciting time of year.  I have just returned from the Cape Ann Retreat and we had a FABULOUS time by the water. Three full days of chatting and knitting were NOT wasted on the group. Four pairs of Swedish Fingerless Mitts were mostly if not fully  completed, and socks as well as a sweater and mittens were worked on. The sound of the waves was as soothing as one could want and we had sunshine every day, allowing for  priceless walks on the beach. Coming back was not so hard with the lovely foliage to enhance the drive, and the knowledge that in April 2011, we will gather there again for Countrywool's first ever week-long retreat, focusing on the projects created by Elizabeth Zimmermann.

If you are hankering for a weekend away knitting (oh, the joy of it is hard to describe), in 3 weeks we gather in the lovely Catskill Mountains at the quaint Winter Clove Inn to work on Gloves, Mitts & Mittens. The drive there just after Halloween is spectacular, and the hot mulled cider you'll find in the retreat hall hits the spot. We welcome beginners and pros alike, and everyone in between. The projects offered are many, but you can work on just one, or all of them!

I continue to knit on the Northcott Cardigan:

I
f you stop in any Knit Nite any Monday, or on any Friday Morning's SIT 'N KNIT this month and want to knit one with me, I'll be happy to gift you with the pattern.

The third weekend in October brings many, many folks into the shop as they head to Rhinebeck for the NYS Sheep and Wool Festival. please know the hot cider will be ON TAP, and homemade cookies will be sitting nearby. Stop and say hi!  Friday we will have ALL DAY HOURS for those of you who are here early for the weekend, and the KNITTING & SPINNING DOCTOR will be in attendance should you have issues with your projects. Come and sit and knit all day!  Better yet, come and shop with a nice discount.

Claudia's Fall Checklist

October is just about here, and although the weather has been balmy, we are due for serious chilliness by this weekend. I just finished my first TUNIC SWEATER for the season and it is being blocked awaiting the side-slit steek cutting. On tap for March 2011 will be a weekend retreat that covers vests and tunics, from button down to pullover types. They are versatile garments that we often neglect in our wardrobes. Traditionally they have been workhorses for craft folk, as arms are unencumbered while neck, back and torso are warm as toast. Stay tuned for more details on this special weekend.

I have decided a
Northcott cardigan sweater (above) needs to be a part of my new wardrobe, and am swatching some Cascade 220 in a lovely straw heather do do the honors. That cardigan is a warm hug made in Peace Fleece, and if you stop in any Knit Nite any Monday this month and want to knit one with me, I'll be happy to gift you with the pattern.

Speaking of Knit Night, we are NOT meeting on October 11, since I will be away teaching at the Cape Ann retreat. (And, looking ahead, Knit Night becomes FRIDAY MORNING  SIT & KNIT starting November 5, as we transition to Solar Friendly Hours until March 2011).

The third weekend in October brings many, many folks into the shop as they head to Rhinebeck for the NYS Sheep and Wool Festival. please know the hot cider will be ON TAP, and homemade cookies will be sitting nearby. Claudia's early Fall Checklist
  • Finish up the Tomten Knit A Long
  • Plan a Tunic Knit A Long
  • Weekend retreat planning

Happy September! Once Labor Day passes and the weather starts to cool, we start looking for knitting, spinning and weaving events to pop up. Everyone gathers at fiber festivals and workshops, enjoying apple cider and pumpkin weather. Knitting becomes a satisfying way to spend a quiet evening at home, or a get together with friends.  It is amazing how much learning happens in any group of knitters and spinners who gather to chat.

The TOMTEN Knit A Long is in progress online in the Countrywoolers group on Ravelry. This week, another Knit A Long, the DESIGN YOUR OWN FALL TUNIC, will start. Come on in and join us!

This Fall Countrywool will sponsor two weekend events and a smattering of one day workshops to help further our collective knowledge of knitting and spinning.  The weekend retreats coming up are both knitting events, one happening in a cottage right on the beach in northern Massachusetts, and the other at the comfy Winter Clove Inn up in the Catskill Mountains of New York. We hope some of you can join us.

This Winter, and next Spring, the opportunities continue. After many requests, I have added a January KNITWORKING retreat to the lineup to fill a need for those who are stalled in the finishing of their projects, and as a place to hold our first ever yarn, needle, pattern and book swap..

As you peruse when and where we are getting together, and how much your pocketbook can afford, please know in this economy we are all being squeezed. I have had to cancel the up and coming spinning retreat due to insufficient registration, and that can happen for any retreat. I have offered discounts for those who REALLY want to come and can register early, and for their friends also, so hopefully that will help.
I am also offering a couple of one-day and 3 hour classes in some new locations in upper New York State. Read all the details on the CLASSES  page of Countrywool's website.

And I will  leave you with this thought...A knitting weekend retreat is an experience that is hard to describe. You learn, you laugh, you eat, you rest, you make new friends. It is a gift to yourself. Do you have family who would want that for you, too? Consider asking for a retreat, or part of one, as a gift from them.  One of our retreaters received Countrywool gift certificates from everyone as her Christmas gift, and put them together for not just one, but two retreats.

Claudia's Late Summer Checklist
  • Back to school knitting list
  • Socks for the fall
  • Winter sweater plans
  • Wash all woolens
  • Stash rotation

So, how do you greet the coming of Fall? Around here it is cause for rejoicing, as cooler temps have me reaching for....wool.  The changing light colors everything in a new way, and those tomato reds, avocado greens, warm golds and russet browns call out to be incorporated in some knitting. I am currently knitting a TOMTEN for our Knit-A-Long in this GREAT oregano-avocado green:

The TOMTEN is a fun knit in garter stitch with very few rules, and yields a hooded (or not) jacket. We are banding together on RAVELRY to keep each other going, and I will be knitting on this garment every MONDAY KNIT NITE.

In late August, I like to
Wash all my winter woolens: Give them a soak in warm sudsy water, and a rinsing soak in warmer clear water, and then they all get some sun to dry out under. Then I pack them away for the chill of September and October, knowing I can count on them when I need them. This is a GREAT time to work through removing any pills that have accumulated on any knitted surface, using sweater stones, de-fuzz its and scissors.
Assemble a Back-To-School knitting list: I spend a chilly morning pondering the coming cold weather and what projects I'll need to make to add to what's available. I love having two shelves of mittens, hats, headbands and slippers to loan to family and friends when the cold gets to them. Sometimes the mittens and hats come back to the shelf, and sometimes they move in with someone else. My sock drawer gets Special Attention, and I plan the next socks I'll want/need.
Dig through my stash and reorganize what yarns I will be using with the projects I now have in mind. I keep a collection of baskets that get emptied as projects are finished, and I use them to arrange pattern and yarn together. Then I prop them on my stairway and in the hall so I can look at them every day.
