Lace Mitts
(copies sold before 9/1/05) new page 3 instructions:

THUMB OPENING:
1st Round: (Pattern Round 2):  Place thumb opening marker. Work first 12 stitches in pattern, place marker for reattaching yarn later, then place on holder: finish round.
2nd Round: (Pattern Round 1): Cast on 12 sitches at beginning of round joining to established stitches: finish round. (see KEY for Twisted Cable Cast On)

Work in LACE STITCH until mitt measures 7.75”. Bind off loosely.

 LACE THUMB:
Attach yarn at thumb opening marker. Lace Stitch pattern is now worked flat, back and forth for thumb cover. Pattern now begins with a Row 1 worked on the INSIDE of the fabric. Mark two vertical lines of stitches starting at each side of the 12 on the needle, and heading towards the bound off edge of the mitt.  Pick up one stitch in the appropriate line two rows below where you end each row, and knit it together with the last stitch on the needle. This sews down the sides of the newly created thumb cover as you knit it. Follow the row instructions below, remembering to work a "new" stitch (as explained above) on the last stitch of each row.
Row 1:  p5, k1, p5, k1
Row 2: p1, k2tog, k3, yo, p1, yo, k3, ssk

Twisted Cable Cast On In The Middle Of The Row = Attach yarn to existing stitches  where new stitches are to be made. Using empty needle, insert needle through first two stitches on right needle and draw a loop of yarn to the front. Give this loop a full 180* twist, and slip it into place to the left of last stitch on right needle. Continue casting on stitches as needed, working through the last two stitches presented on right needle
