Dee Cotherman's Mitered Squares Afghan
Knitting For The Neighborhood is an effort held together by a group of volunteer knitters who work to provide hats, mittens, afghans, blankets, scarves and socks for needy people in our area of Columbia and Greene Counties in New York State. The group meets the first Monday evening of each month, from 6pm-8pm at Countrywool (directions). You need not be an experienced knitter to help..most of the patterns we use are very basic, and help is available at every meeting from other members.
We
also make wool blankets, hats, socks and mittens for weekly delivery
to New York City shelters in the cold months.
Yarn
and patterns are provided by donations to the effort, and are always
welcome.

We have some internet friends who cannot attend our meetings, but have sent boxes of their handknit goods to our effort. We have made contact with them through the internet KNITLIST and SOCKNITTERS and CIC KNIT.
We got our start years ago, but have been loosely organized as we did not have a regular place to meet. When Countrywool expanded its shop area in 1998, we were able to meet and work together regularly. We have been involved with The Presbyterian Women of Valatie as they work hard on Warm Up America donations (they have been known to make over 60 afghans a year!!!). In the past we have donated our knitted items to the Edith Casey Stocking Fund, Catholic Family Services, The Office for The Aging, Meals On Wheels and just about anyone who needed something. We are very open to the needs of the community....please

with any requests you may have, and she will pass them onto the group.
In 1999, we embarked on a very special SOCK
PROJECT. We made (and are making) socks for children in the
impoverished orphanages in Lithuania and Russia. I have written a
pattern that is free to all, and available on that page. Also available
is a WHAT, NO POCKET? VEST pattern. There are also many more pattern
links
below for free patterns on the Internet, good for charity knitting
projects
such as ours.
